Privacy

What GPA Shark stores, where it lives, and what it never collects.

The short version

  • No advertising, no analytics and no tracking. Nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
  • Every course outline, the planner and the GPA calculator work without an account.
  • An account only keeps the answers you choose to give it.

Kept in your browser

  • While you are signed out, GPA scenarios you choose to save. Numbers you type into the calculator are not stored. Signed in, the calculator is kept with your account instead.
  • Assessments you mark as handed in on the planner, while you are signed out. Signed in, these — and any mark you record for them — are kept with your account instead.
  • Your answer to the privacy notice, and a count of recent email sign-in requests, used to slow repeated attempts.
  • The courses you pick while signed out, in a small first-party cookie so pages open on your courses. Signing in moves them into your account and removes the cookie.
  • A picture of each workspace page as you last left it, where you were on it, and the last few pages you visited, so a link can show the page it opens, a page comes back to where you were reading, and the hub can offer to pick up where you left off. The name of the last page is kept in a small first-party cookie for that offer. Signing out forgets all of it.
  • How you arrange each page's boxes, which ones you open up or put away, and whether the sidebar is folded, in small first-party cookies, so pages are drawn your way.
  • Clearing your browser data removes all of these. None of them is ever uploaded.
  • When you sign in, sign-in session cookies keep you signed in. Signing out removes them.
  • If you allow it in the privacy notice, Google’s one-tap sign-in prompt loads from Google and uses Google’s own cookies. Choosing Opt out keeps it from loading.
  • Continue with Google is handled by Google under Google’s privacy policy.

Kept with your account

  • Your email address and, if you sign in with Google, the name and picture on that Google account.
  • The setup answers you give: preferred name, program, year and GPA goal.
  • The courses you follow, and your email preferences, which all start off.
  • The assessments you mark as handed in, and any mark you record for them, once you are signed in.
  • What you type into the GPA calculator and the scenarios you save, so they are on every device you sign in on.
  • Transcripts you add: only the courses and grades you confirm. The file is not kept, and nor is your student number, birth date or address.
  • Course outlines you put in: the dates, weights, topics and policies Claude reads from them. A course's first outline is saved as soon as it is read, and you can correct any item or undo it. The file you uploaded is not kept.
  • Notes, briefs, slides and readings you add to a course: these files are kept, in storage only your own account can read. Nothing else on GPA Shark stores a file you upload.
  • Your chats with Bite, and which files you gave it.
  • Account data is stored with Supabase in Canada and protected by row-level security, so each account can only read its own rows.

Connecting VIULearn

  • If you connect VIULearn, GPA Shark opens a temporary, secure browser window and you sign in directly with VIU — your password and MFA code go only to VIU's own sign-in page. GPA Shark never receives, stores or logs them.
  • Once you are signed in, GPA Shark reads your courses from VIULearn — their dropboxes, quizzes, discussions, grade book, calendar, announcements and the pages of their content, and your own submissions to each dropbox and any feedback and marks released on them — and stores what they add up to with your account: each piece of work, when it is due and what it is worth, whether you handed it in there, the marks and feedback released, the latest announcements, the weekly plan and the course's links, the same as an outline you upload or type in yourself.
  • Each course's syllabus, when its VIULearn page has one, is downloaded and kept the same way a file you upload yourself is: in your own private storage, which nobody but you can read, counted against the same file-storage limit. An outline written on VIULearn itself is kept as a text file of its words.
  • None of this is sent to Claude or any other AI. A sync reads VIULearn and the syllabus by rule, in GPA Shark's own code.
  • To keep your courses current, GPA Shark keeps that sign-in: VIULearn's own session cookies for learn.viu.ca, encrypted before they are stored, never your password. With them it reads your courses again about once an hour, in the background, and saves what changed the next time you open GPA Shark. The kept sign-in only works on learn.viu.ca. It ends when VIU signs it out — which it does after a while, and GPA Shark then says syncing is paused — or when you choose "Stop syncing in the background" in Settings, which deletes it.
  • A mark or tick you entered yourself always wins over VIULearn's. Where a dropbox or quiz on VIULearn is due on a different day than your outline says, GPA Shark counts down to VIULearn's date and shows the outline's beside it; one tap switches back to the outline's. A quiz that only stands in for a test given in class never moves the outline's date.
  • You can remove an outline synced from VIULearn from that course's own page, the same as removing one you uploaded. A syllabus it kept can be deleted from your course files the same as one you added yourself.

Sharing a course outline

  • An outline you put in is yours alone unless you choose to share it. Nothing is shared by default.
  • If you do share one, students whose own section matches yours can read it — nobody else, signed in or not. That check is made in the database, not by the page.
  • What they can read is the outline as facts: its dates, weights, topics, policy summaries and short quotes. Not the file you uploaded, not your notes on it, not the file’s name, and not which account shared it.
  • It is marked as a classmate’s copy that nobody has checked. A classmate who takes a copy gets their own, which they can correct.
  • You can stop sharing at any time. Your section stops seeing it; copies already taken stay with whoever took them.
  • Sharing an outline never shares your files. Notes, briefs and slides you add to a course are yours alone, and there is no way to share them.

Email

  • The only email GPA Shark sends today is the sign-in link you ask for.
  • Reminder and summary emails are not being sent yet. Your preferences are saved so that, once they are, only what you turned on arrives.

AI: Bite and imports

  • Bite, the course assistant, runs on Anthropic’s Claude: your questions and the files you attach go there to be answered.
  • Files you give Bite stay at Anthropic for a week, or until you delete them from your files.
  • A note or brief you keep with a course is only sent to Anthropic if you ask Bite to read it, and its copy there lasts a week. Yours stays in GPA Shark’s storage until you delete it.
  • Schedules, transcripts and course outlines you import are sent to Claude to be read. GPA Shark does not keep the file. From a schedule or transcript it saves only what you confirm; from an outline, what Claude read, which you can correct or undo.
  • Where a course outline prohibits AI, Bite covers only that course’s syllabus, dates and your schedule.

Changing or removing your data

  • Every setup answer can be changed or cleared in Settings, and unticking a course removes it.
  • An outline you put in can be replaced or removed on its course page, which also stops sharing it.
  • Files you added to a course can be deleted on that course page; deleting one removes the stored file too.
  • Deleting a whole account is not self-serve yet.
